The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) had its beginning from foundation of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Madras, Tamil Nadu, as soon as 1868 and it was subsequently moved at Coimbatore. In 1920 it was subsidiary to Madras University. TNAU accepted full obligations of Agricultural Education and Research and upheld the State Agricultural Department by conveying research items. Till 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, was the main Institute for Agricultural Education for the entire of South India. In 1958, it was perceived as a Post-graduate Center prompting Masters and Doctoral certifications. The Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai was set up in 1965. These two schools shaped the core of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University while it was set up in 1971.
